Night Sky Polish Comparisons

I have been meaning to put this post together forever, so today I figured what they hey and hauled out all my polishes.

Essie Starry Starry Night

Essie’s much coveted Starry Starry Night is an elusive lemming for many. I remember a time when you could pick this baby up for less than ten bucks on eBay, but now I have seen it go for ten times that. Ridiculous. The good news is that with a little patience and a little detective work you’ll be able to find something close that may not be as harsh on the wallet. The bad news is that ALL of these polishes are discontinued. I know, its pretty crap. China Glaze need to do a Night Sky collection. Dark, inky jellies infused with silver glitter. Maroon, Purple, Green, Black and of course Blue. It would be totally badass!

But yes, here are today’s contestants.

Starry Night
1. Maybelline Twinkle Twinkle, 2. Maybelline Zip Fly, 3. L’oreal Ocean, 4. L’oreal Galactica, 5. Chanel Ciel De Nuit, 6. Rimmel Star Trek, 7. Naturistics Crystal Blue Pearl, 8. Misa Midnight Sky, 9. Townley Ocean Ice, 10. Icing Moonlight Ice

Round 1
Round 1: L to R – Maybelline Twinkle Twinkle, Maybelline Zip Fly, L’oreal Ocean, L’oreal Galactica

Maybelline Twinkle Twinkle1. Maybelline Twinkle Twinkle
Bought for < $5 Still available from time to time on eBay and found in Dollar Trees
Twinkle Twinkle (along with Zip Fly) is often touted as a bang on dupe for Essie’s SSN. As you can see, that’s not the case at all. The base colour of Twinkle Twinkle is much darker and has a different consistency and a slight shimmer. The glitter particles are also less dense and much finer.

Maybelline Zip Fly2. Maybelline Zip Fly
Bought for < $5 Still available from time to time on eBay and found in Dollar Trees
Zip Fly is almost identical to Twinkle Twinkle, the only difference being that the base is lighter. It’s the same consistency and has the same hidden shimmer. Zip Fly was part of the Maybelline Denim Collection along with others like Jaded Blues and Button Fly.

L'oreal Ocean3. L’oreal Ocean
Bought for < $10 Still available from time to time on eBay UK
L’oreal Ocean is nothing like SSN at all. The base is inky and dark and the glitter particles are more like a fine shimmer. Rather than being silver they are blue. The polish itself is stunning and I believe (although don’t quote me) that the Laquiresist line was sold more in the UK than anywhere else? I seem to have the best luck with that line on eBay UK. I have seen Ocean pop up a few times in the last year or so.

L'oreal Galactica4. L’oreal Galactica
Bought for < $2 Still available from time to time on eBay UK
L’oreal Galactica is an almost black jelly base with very sparse large silver glitter chunks spread throughout. If you’re looking here for a SSN dupe then this is definitely the wrong place. Galactica sure is pretty though and I have seen it sell for as little as 0.99p on eBay UK. Not too difficult to track down.

Round 2
Round 2: L to R – Chanel Ciel De Nuit, Rimmel Star Trek, Naturistics Crystal Blue Pearl, Misa Midnight Sky

Chanel Ciel De Nuit5. Chanel Ciel De Nuit
I’m not telling how much I paid for this because then you’ll know I’m crazy.
Available for a ridonkulous price on eBay

If you want to blame anyone for SSN insanity, this is the best place to start. Released in 1998, well before Essie’s SSN, Ciel De Nuit is the white whale for Night Sky polish lovers. Unfortunately, someone on eBay is selling these for a ridiculous amount. $100+ – which I think is just insane for one polish. I got mine from Japan. Much cheaper, but still not cheap. SSN is much more Violet than Ciel De Nuit even though it was designed to emulate the Chanel. Expensive, luxurious and beautiful, but not a dupe.

Rimmel Star Trek6. Rimmel Star Trek
Bought for < $2 Available from time to time on eBay UK
Now we’re heading into potential dupe territory! Rimmel Star Trek is a FAB polish. Awesome colour, awesome name. I even love the Rimmel bottles! The only downside is that it’s so small. I wish there was more of it and I am afraid to use it! I have had three of these pass through my hands (two have gone on to new homes) and I bought all three for 0.99p each. They pop up, so be patient and keep your eyes peeled on eBay UK. Star Trek is more blue than SSN, but VERY close.

Naturistics Crystal Blue Pearl7. Naturistics Crystal Blue Pearl
Bought for < $10 Available from time to time on eBay, May be found at Dollar Tree
Strongly advocated as “THE” SSN dupe, out of this bunch I would have to say that I am inclined to agree. Naturistics Crystal Blue Pearl is a tad more violet to my eyes, but the consistency of the polish and the glitter size are both identical to SSN. I have seen this polish slowly become a bit more pricey in the last 6-8 months when it does pop up, but I have yet to see it go any higher than the $20 mark. Those that are really lucky may be able to nab it for $1.00 from the Dollar Tree!

Misa Midnight Sky8. Misa Midnight Sky
Bought for < $15 Very HTF
I never even knew this polish existed until Hot Metal Chicky posted about her old Misa finds on her blog. This polish just arrived today and I tell you, even though it is nothing like SSN at all, I still had to include it because it is so freakin awesome! In relation to SSN, the base is much lighter, even more lilac if that makes sense, and there is a TON more glitter. The silver glitter even looks kind of goldish in some lights. Now, Misa releases collection after collection of cremes. WHHHHHY?

Bonus: Index & Ring – Townley Ocean Ice, Middle & Pinky – Icing Moonlight Ice

Townley Ocean Ice9. Townley Ocean Ice
Bought for < $2 Very HTF
I know that the both of these polishes are far too blue to be close to SSN but I wanted to include them anyway. I’ve had Townley Ocean Ice for about 12 years now. I used to paint my nails at school with this bottle. And it’s still just as awesome as the day I bought it. There goes the “polish goes bad” myth. Beautiful bright blue jelly with silver glitter. Lovely.

Icing Moonlight Ice10. Icing Moonlight Ice
Bought for < $5 Very HTF
I got this one with a bunch of other ancient Icing polishes on eBay about a year ago. I thought it might be a SSN dupe when I bought it, but it’s more likely a dupe of my Ocean Ice! It’s just a little lighter, but still beautiful nonetheless.

The Verdict
I think if I had to pick one of these polishes and proclaim it SSN dupe it would have to be Naturistics Crystal Blue Pearl with Rimmel Star Trek a close second. Also with a mention is Chi Chi Moondust, which I would have included here today, but my bottle appears to have gone walkies. Oh well, at least it’s nothing more than a trip to Target to replace!

Wow, this entry has taken me almost two hours to write! Those that think blogging isn’t hard work, you’re totally wrong! I hope this has helped people looking for SSN!

Wow, thanks so much for this! I wish I lived in the US so I could go to Dollar Tree. Unfortunately I will probably stick to the ChiChi as it will be easiest for me to get. I would have loved to see it in the comparison. To me it looks slightly more purple than SSN and it has (dare I say it) too much glitter. I love the medium density of glitter in SSN. Do you have any franken recipes using polishes easily available either in Oz or from the etailers?

Karen, thanks for the post, SSN is beautiful and still on my lemming list, most of the time i talk myself out of wanting it becuase it’s going for a crazy price on ebay 😐

  • Wow, who knew there were so many “night sky” nail polishes from a few years back. All of these are beautiful. I think Essie is just plain stupid not to bring a sure fire hot seller back to market. I mean, business likes to make money, so what is the hold up? I’m betting the second release will sell out almost instantly.
I’d love to have any one of these. Thanks for the comparison and all your hard work putting this together! :drl:

  • Wow! What an awesome post. Thanks for taking the time to put this post together. It’s very helpful. I think Misa Midnight is my favorite out all the possible look a likes.

  • Thank you for this amazing post! It does drive my lemming level for SSN up into the sky, but so what! I really do appreciate the time you must have invested for all those swatches, a big thumbs up and yay! for you! 🙂

OMG, what an awesome post! I’ve been looking for a Night Sky comparison post forever – these are my absolute favorite polishes! CDN is my biggest and oldest lemming – dating back to 1996! I wanted this polish the second I saw it in seventh grade! Now I’m gonna be combing eBay looking for L’Oreal Ocean and that Misa – both of which I didn’t know existed! Thank you sooo much for this! Your time and efforts are MUCH appreciated! 🙂

I get such a kick out of the fact that all your dupes bar one is less expensive than the Chi Chi. Oh Chi Chi, you are one overpriced polish.

i got Naturistics crystal blue pearl on ebay before the prices started going up.

Doing a mani with it tonight!

The prices on is ridiculously insane. A bottle of Cry Baby is more than $100?? Anyone who buys on that website is a complete idiot. Because you can find better deals.
