Old Urban Decay Polish – Part 1 of 2

Recently on twitter, a friend of mine (Nicole from Magic Maid) mentioned that she was hunting down old Urban Decay polishes. Of course, my interested was immediately piqued, as Urban Decay are 90’s, HTF and long discontinued. And well, old polish is my ideal. I have gathered up a small pile of old UD’s myself in the past couple of years.

I haven’t had a chance to rifle through my Helmers yet, but I am pretty sure my collection consists of Toxin, Id, Kiss, Trip, Bruise, Cult, Twisted, Big Bang, Metropolitan and O. I have a feeling that I am forgetting some, although I guess I will find that out for sure when I pull them out to photograph them this weekend.

Apologies for the state of my nails in some of these swatches – some of them are pretty old! And a good deal of them could probably do wth reswatching! It is indeed a shame that Urban Decay has discontinued sych an amazing polish line, although it was great to see Big Bang make a reappearance the the Apocalyptic Nail Kit that we saw released last year. It was the first of two sets (to be followed by Summer of Love) and even though they were only minis it was awesome that Urban Decay was once again making a foray into the nail polish world. They did lack the punch of both the previous UD lines, but beggars can’t be choosers right?

You might notice that I said BOTH previous UD lines. Some of you may not be aware that UD’s first polishes were released in the mid 90’s in Hot Topic style bottles emblazoned with the original Urban Decay Logo.

There used to be a Geocities site many, many years ago that these pictures came from, I managed to save them before Yahoo closed down Geocities. I have no idea who to credit for them – if you know, leave me a comment! But I would like to post them simply because I think UD history like this should not be lost!

Also, I would seriously cut a bitch to find ANY of these. :awe:

You know, I remember when UD came out – I think I was reading a Sassy article on beauty and they were talking about the edgy, funky names. Boy, those original bottles bring back some memories and I’d LOVE to get my hands on them but I never see them anywhere.
I will hunt down the newer bottles, as many as I can get my hands on, though. I’m glad you managed to save the original pictures, that’s awesome!
Can’t wait to see what else you dig out!

Unfortunately I don’t think that these made it to Australia. But I do most of my polish shopping online anyway so I am happy to use eBay and etailers to track down what I can.

  • Seriously, I NEVER see those old UDs anywhere! WHERE HAVE THEY GONE?!

  • Kaz

I know! You would think some of them would show up on eBay or something!?

  • i too would shank a nun for those. any nun, any time, if she came between me and an old UD

I agree. I definitely think they have lost their edge and gone more mainstream.

  • Kaz

Oh wow, I’m so jealous! Pretty sure that Urban Decay has never been sold in Australia.

I feel your pain on turfing old stuff before we knew any better. I think a lot of us a guilty of that!

The colour sounds familiar but I can’t seem to find it. Perhaps X? I think that one had more of a gold sheen though. Asphyxia perhaps? Although that shimmer was more blue.

Let me think about it. If I find something I’ll email you.

My aunt bought me a bottle of Shattered possibly for my birthday in 1996. Unfortunately, my friends turned against me and mocked me for wearing blue nail polish. I was never able to wear it again, and eventually tossed it when it dried out.

Oh man, that sucks! I think these old bottles are going to be super hard to find because they dry out and get tossed so easily.
